Deep in your brain, a tiny cluster of neurons called the suprachiasmatic nucleus acts as your master clock. It receives light signals directly from the retina and uses them to synchronize every system in your body—hormone release, body temperature, sleep timing. For millions of years, the only signal it received after sunset was darkness, which triggers many biological functions via melatonin, like deep sleep.
Modern lighting breaks this ancient system. LEDs and screens flood our eyes with blue wavelengths that hit the suprachiasmatic nucleus and tell it "it's still daytime." The result: suppressed melatonin, and a confused and out-of-rhythm organism.
